: >>What is absolutely phenomenal about red tide is night. These lil critters in the water give off light when frustrated. As the waves crash, bluish lightning shoots across the face of the wave. If you walk on the west sand at night, explosions of blue light shoot out from where you step..., it's awesome.<<

Brad, I experienced this once a few years back while camping on the beach in Baja,Mexico. One woman in our group discovered it and started waking up everyone to come check it out. This lead to a spontanious skinny dip of about 20 campers, some were even applying sand like body paint, a handfull of sand just squeezed and open would make you think you had magical powers. And splashing around in the water started some playful water fights that were almost as you say, like sci-fi special FX.

I do not recall anyone having any skin problems from their exposure to it, but do you know if it is pretty safe to swim in it ??? I tried a few time-exposure photos, but nothing showed up.
