Subject: What's the deal with SLR's at events?

I have noticed recently that more events and venues are stating that SLR’s or cameras with removable lenses are not allowed.  Why is that?

Re: What's the deal with SLR's at events?

To attempt to keep out the PROS ,[and anyone making money from the event], i would guess. they are dumb though, with cameras that are coming out now, just as good or in some cases better then the DSLR’s. soon they wont be able to keep out any cameras. or in doing so it would be a total waste of time trying to do so. as is with a lot of tech. things that were kept from the public are getting out, soon there will be, “no more secrets”

but, getting back to what your question was, which events/venues are you talking about? not many I know of, like the fantesy fest, are even able to try that, most of it is in public places. and trying to make that illegal to have and use a camera, any type of camera, would be an illegal law/regulation! and things like NAPS want coverage, from what i have seen, they want it, they encourage it i believe! dont they?

Mainly venues.  I have been to a number of concerts that say no SLRs.  I also was at a college sporting event in the on campus arena and they gave me the third degree.  Wanting to know how long the lens was.  She wasn’t aware enough to know that the lens telescoped.

Re: What's the deal with SLR's at events?

I only ran into this once years ago in Phoenix (Alwin House erotic art show.)  What I’m expecting to see soon is any still camera (SLR or otherwise) banned if it can shoot HD video.  My current SLR can, so I am now taking my old camera body (which does not do video) with me in case I have to switch it out real fast to get into an event.

Re: What's the deal with SLR's at events?

fingers…so true so true…. soon then if what you say comes to pass, every camera will be banned, even cells. they all will be shooting HD, its a joke to a point. but they do what they think they got to do to protect selves from being exploited from equity that they seem to think belongs to them! thats about it, money being the bottom line here. I daugther was seeing a show a few years back, and i was online getting the tickets. i was talking to her about it and she seemed to think she was not allowed to bring her camera, then i told her, it says right on the site that cameras were allowed, the exception being the ones with lens that detached from the camera body. [explanation to a non-photographer…lol] hers of course was a P/S so she had no problem.

heya fingers, i was going into a rollingstones concert a,...hmmm, fews years back. was bringing in the 35mm and zoom lens and all, [in my boots, along the sides on the inside] they patted me down, found them made me bring them back to the car….LOL. wow how much things change, but remain the same….ssdd.

Re: What's the deal with SLR's at events?

NAP has many “No Video” zones posted around their main stage, to prevent video by non-VIP shooters of the dance contests. The Oregon Country Fair is another venue where video is strictly prohibited, while still cameras are welcome. They claim that the stage performers do not want people selling video of their acts. With “flip” cameras capable of shooting HD video, it seems they will either give up and allow all video and still cameras, OR ban all cameras. Would a ban on cameras affect ticket sales? Photgraphers may quit going, but exhibitionists who don’t want to show up on the internet may prefer a camera ban. So, I guess bottom line is to ask a venue what their camera policy is BEFORE buying a ticket… Most irritating is if YOU play by the rules and see everyone else breaking the rules, and the policy is not uniformly enforced.

Re: What's the deal with SLR's at events?

I am curious about this and also wonder what events/venues are doing this. It sounds like you are not talking necessarily about events with nudity, and that perhaps most of the venues restricting DSLR’s do not feature nudity? In that case, we have a different situation than with OCF, for example, and that the restriction does not have to do with protecting women from being uploaded to the net in HD.

Re: What's the deal with SLR's at events?

Riverslug…that is correct.  More sporting events and concerts.

I think electronics (phones, cameras, etc) are becoming so prevalent and accepted that facilities won’t be able to enforce this for long.  Try telling people they can’t bring their phone with them.  Won’t happen.  People are to attached to them.  Cameras are becoming so small and good that they will be difficult to keep out.  Lots of younger people (I think mainly girls) these days carry small cameras with them all the time.  I have a point and shoot with video and a great zoom.  18x optical.  I can get great pics at concerts with out having to be close.

peanutphant:
i shoot a DSLR as many know, and own/use a SONY 80gb-hard drive camcorder, but i have never seen a 18x/optical p/s. which one is it, here is my address if you dont think it would be a good idea to start talking about it here in the tub.  rebeldslr@gmail.com i may very well may be in the market for one of those.

[i was also seeing something about many here wanting more beach items here on COCCOZELLA, well tell ya all what, if I had even one person that would even just tag along with me, there may be a chance that I could get some more, anyone live or know anyone in the south fla. up for the challenge? i figured posting this here was as good as any, if there was any interest, it would get around, the way i see it thru my eyes. no one can post what hasnt been shot yet….etc. {maybe i should also try to use craigslist and ask that same thing?}]

Re: What's the deal with SLR's at events?

Hi USA:  There are lots of them out there.  Just type in superzoom camera into Amazon and you’ll get a list.  from about 2004-2007 I was using a Fuji 6.3 MP camera that had an electronic viewfinder and about 18x optical zoom.  In the Amazon list I see an Olympus 14 MP with at 30x optical for $250, one with 18x optical for $199, etc.  The price range seems to run from $200 to $500.  Some still have an electronic viewfinder, others now just use the back panel as a screen which I find unacceptable.

Once the SLR market price dropped to a reasonable range there just was no reason not to go there.  I shot the entry level 10MP Nikon 40x from 2007 to 2011, and have just upgraded to the 16.3 MP Nikon D-7000 which uses the same lens and works really well in low light.  If you can’t afford the $1000 for the SLR and lens, then the superzooms are a really good option.

Re: What's the deal with SLR's at events?

USA - I have a NIkon Coolpix S9100.  18x optical zoom with 12.1 megapixels.  I like the camera very much.  I go to a lot of concerts and it can really zoom in on the stage (and any thing else interesting to take pictures of).  When in video mode it records the live music without much, if any, distortion.

Re: What's the deal with SLR's at events?

If you all haven’t read Grand Hunter’s post in the No Exotic Erotic Ball thread, the replacement for the ball, Masquerotica, has posted a no SLR policy.  I had already bought my ticket so may find myself shooting with a Nikon point and shoot I have.  If the policy is aimed at keeping photos off the web it won’t work.  Most people shoot with at point and shoot camera, and then post to photo sharing sites.

Re: What's the deal with SLR's at events?

Hi everyone,

We asked them for a “Press Pass” (as that seems to be what is needed in order to use whichever camera), however they’ve denied our request as there is no advertised nudity at their event.

It’s a bit of a “Catch-22” for us, unfortunately. I kind of saw it coming but thought it was worth asking for all the same.

Good luck to those who are going :-)
